question A
It has been evident through many of the stories that the class has read that it is not healthy at all to practice such self sacrifice. one prime example of this would be the story of siddharta. the physical strain that it takes to trick your body to do things such as fast for days, and meditate for days at a time. though this self sacrifice sounds very commendable in the popular siddharta folktale, it would not be best for someone to live their life like this in today's modern world. this would be tragic because there would be many unhealthy people with broken homes, all because they devoted all of their time to trying to reach enlightenment and not showing their children the right way to live.

I also agree that it isn't healthy physically to put your body through such strain in starving as well as mentally because you're risking the possibility of being devoted to something that might not happen, such as afterlife or enlightenment. Even if it did lead to a good cause, it's unhealthy to devote yourself to these self-sacrificing practices anyway because you force yourself to go through all this unnecessary suffering.

ReplyDeleteYou seem to overlook that there are plenty of unhealthy people in broken homes in our society and it's not due to meditating. Do you think there are as many suffering and broken homes in Buddhist Napal? People may be "poorer" there, but do you think they're depressed about this?
